About a month ago, I took a moment to ask my Instagram followers about potential blog post topics they wanted me to discuss. This question was asked way before I announced the relaunch of the Dericka Writes website, and even before I began working on my website! I did this on purpose, though, because I wanted to hear my followers’ thoughts and opinions beforehand.
I received one response that truly stood out to me, which was to discuss content writing tips for small businesses. I first saw this topic and got inspired instantly because of my love for these types of businesses. Y’all know how much I love small businesses (you’ll literally hear me talk about them all through my Instagram page), and I will do anything to ensure their success.
Now. I got y’all covered with these three main tips to help improve your content writing! I guarantee as you try these tips out on your content, more people will identify your personality and the mission of your business/brand. Let’s get it!
Know Your Industry’s Lingo
Before you can ever impact your business, you first have to understand how your industry’s people talk to their followers or customers. This part will help you in multiple ways to impact your business, with the most important being:
- Attracting your desired and correct audience.
- Knowing how to speak/write for your audience through social media.
- Connect with other like-minded people and learn more about your industry.
Like most areas, however, knowing is only half the battle. In fact, knowing your industry lingo doesn’t mean anything if you’re not actively practicing and learning. Words change, phrases are no longer being used, and new written and verbal communication methods are being created every day. Staying up to date on it all will be a daily battle that you must fully adjust to if you want to succeed.
How can you start building the vocabulary for your small business? Simple! Learning your industry’s lingo is similar to learning another language, and the following tips can help you stay committed and become more knowledgeable of your industry overall:
- Discipline yourself and hold yourself accountable. You shouldn’t expect others to tell you about your own industry’s language. Therefore, you have to act as your own coach and properly train yourself to learn steadily.
- Learn from others in your industry. Everyone knows the old saying that you learn from the masters. Well, it’s time to put those words into action! Don’t be afraid to follow those in the same industry as you and reach out for support.
- Conduct your own research. Look, not everyone is going to keep you updated on the language of your industry. So, it’s time to put your fingers to work and conduct your own research to learn on your own!
Speak More From Your Heart
As small business owners, we have a special ability that many larger corporations don’t (and never will) utilize. Do you know what that is exactly? It’s the ability to write and speak from your heart!
I’ve mentioned this plenty of times in my past posts and lives, but I’m going to say it once again:
People are purchasing from your business based on who you are, not because of what you’re selling.
Let me explain this statement further. What people love more than anything in this world is to relate to other people. This statement is especially true for businesses because people want to establish trust before purchasing anything from you. Otherwise, they’re going to turn the other way and look for what they want from somewhere else.
A great way to establish a personal relationship with your audience is to speak from your heart. Completing this task doesn’t have to only apply to one sector of your small business. In fact, there are multiple creative ways to complete this action while also keeping your operations moving. Here are a few examples:
- Interact with your audience on social media platforms.
- Write handwritten notes whenever your audience purchases from your business.
- Respond to comments on your social media pages and websites.
- Write/talk about bits of your life (like a behind the scenes look at the person behind the business).
Don’t Be Afraid To Tell A Story
I have always loved writing simply because of how creative I could become with my words. As small business owners, you can do the same as well just by telling a simple story revolving around your business.
Am I talking about telling your life story to your audience? Well, yes. However, that is only part of the point that I’m trying to make. I want to understand that if you begin to talk about your business creatively, people will connect to you faster. Then, you’ll see your followers increase and the sales coming from the right people.
I’m going to provide a personal example. While I began to find my purpose within Dericka Writes, my personality began to show much more through my posts. As a result, I began to use creative storytelling to talk about my purpose, my services, and much more.
What were the results from doing this and putting my storytelling out there? The following actions occurred over the course of several months:
- More people connected with my mission and vision for Dericka Writes.
- People began to identify my personality and connect with my energy.
- More people followed me to learn about writing and how it can change their businesses.
- People learned more about my services and wanted to partake in what I was offering.
- Individuals began to spread the word about Dericka Writes through the stories I told them.
Imagine how much your small business could change if you changed the words around to captivate your audience.
